East Coast: City of Winston-Salem's Wake Forest Elevated Tank
Tank Industry Consultants completed the rehabilitation of the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina's 1,000,000 gallon Wake Forest Elevated Tank. The rehabilitation included:
The complete cleaning and repainting of the tank on the interior surfaces and the complete cleaning and repainting of the exterior surfaces with containment. Additional work items included: installation of new riser manhole, riser sample tap, handrail for riser stairs, balcony handrail extension, shell and roof ladder, interior container ladder, interior riser ladder, ladder safe-climbing devices, new exterior overflow pipe with anti-vortex device and elastomeric check valve, splash pad, roof manhole, clog-resistant vent, protective cover for inlet/outlet pipe, riser safety grate, and brackets and fittings for a future cathodic protection system; modification of electrical outlets in vault, balcony obstruction lights, and roof railing; removal of antenna mounts on balcony, mud valve, and interior overflow pipe; first anniversary evaluation, disposal of debris and site restoration.
The existing coatings on the tank exterior contained lead-based pigments. The project specifications prepared by TIC required a Class 2 containment system. Soil samples taken prior to and at the completion of the rehabilitation project verified that the project had not had a negative impact on the soil and surrounding property.
